One of the newest minds bringing theater to the dance
stage, Otis Cook, for five years, was a core dancer and choreographer
for the prolific Pilobolus Dance Theater. He also has created and toured
with Momix and Diavolo Dance Theater. He teaches master classes in Dance
and creative movement at universities and High Schools across the U.S.
and Internationally.
Mr. Cook was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania,
where he discovered the stage life at the early age of 15 as a professional
break-dancer. He left his small town, with a scholarship to study for
two years in Japan. When he returned to the United States he entered
Kent State University, focusing on Architecture and Asian Languages.
After a visit to the see the Beijing Opera in China, however, Otis experienced
an epiphany and returned to Kent State as a student in the Performing
Arts Department.
His early work included Summer Stock as an actor and stage combatant
in the Native American Outdoor Dramas, The Legend Of Daniel Boone and
Blue Jacket. During the off season he worked as a Gymnastics Instructor
at Thoroughbread Gymnastics in Kentucky.
Over the past seven years, Otis has worked for several Dance companies;
First touring with the prop intensive company, Diavolo based out of Los
Angeles, performances included the Opening Gala of the Los Angeles Getty
Museum. In 1998, He joined Pilobolus. With them, He performed over 500
shows, traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Internationally;
He choreographed and performed 11 original works in addition to dancing
10 works of their repertory. Over the five years Otis spent with Pilobolus,
he worked in collaboration with Maurice Sendak, Kodo's Leonard Eto, The
Saint Lawrence String Quartet, The Klezmatics, and The Maria Schnider
Jazz Orchestra. As a freelance performer Otis continues to work with
Pilobolus Institute and Pilobolus Too. He has also toured with Moses
Pendleton's, Momix performing the desert inspired piece, Opus Cactus.
His film and television work includes a featured
role in Mira Banks' Award winning Documentary "The Last Dance" about
the collaboration between Pilobolus and celebrated children's writer
Maurice Sendak. He has also had guest appearances on The Regis and
Kathy Lee show; The Regis and Kelly Show; Good Morning America;
PBS's the Egg and was interviewed on 60 Minutes. His body sculptures,
in collaboration with Pilobolus, have appeared in National Geographic,
Newsweek and Time Magazine and have also been published in the book,
Twisted Yoga as well as numerous calendars.
Mr. Cook's recent independent choreographic ventures include a residency
at Wesleyan University. In April, he completed choreographing a haunting
rendition of Franz Schubert's opera, Winterise, sung by Terry Cook and
narrated by Lynn Redgrave.
An Active amateur naturalist, Otis continues to fold nature and the
human struggle into his works. He is presently developing a photo story
book and an Evening in the woods with Hanzel and Gretel. He is currently
performing around the US. and directing Events of Art for galas and corporate
events, as well as teaching master classes in modern dance, creative
movement and choreography.
